Virtual Conference

The Delaware Valley, East Penn, and North East Penn Sections hosted ASHE’s first, and only, virtual conference.

2020
2020 Conference cancelled

For the first time in ASHE’s history, a conference was cancelled.  The host, the Carolina Triangle Section, would go on to host the 2024 conference.

Virtual meetings

The first virtual meeting of the National Board was held, due to the COVID 19 pandemic.  The next in-person meeting was on October 16, 2021, in Norfolk, VA  . The board made numerous adjustments and changes, including extending the President Tim Matthews’ term by one year.

Reorganization

The National Board approved a restructuring of the National Board as follows:

– Northeast remains the same
– Mid-Atlantic Remains the same
– Southeast adds Arkansas and Louisiana
– Great Lakes adds Minnesota and North Dakota
– Combine North and South Central to make on Central Region (remove MS, LA, ND, MN, TX, and OK)
– Rocky Mt Region adds Texas and Oklahoma (removes WY)
– Northwest Region remains the same
– Southwest Region remains the same

Add a tenth National Director to the National Board

2019

National adopts a Society-wide insurance policy, insuring all Sections and National Conferences.

Ms. Nancy Morisi appointed Administrative Assistant to assume all duties of the Secretary’s Assistant and President’s Assistant.

2017
ASHE Project of the Year

ASHE presented the first Project of the Year (PotY) awards at the 2017 Conference in New York City.  Each year, ASHE regions nominate projects of note in two categories, under $20,000,000 and over $20,000,000 for consideration by the National PotY committee.  First year winning projects were the Skipp Spann Connector, from Georgia Section, and the Ohio River Downtown Bridges from the Derby City Section.

Gold Coast Section is now South Florida

The Gold Coast Section was renamed the South Florida Section, to more accurately describe the section’s location.

2013
Russell Horn

Russell Horn, PE, long time ASHE supporter passed away on December 4 at the age of 101.  Mr. Horn’s foundation supports the Robert E. Pearson Person of the Year Award winner with a grant of $1,000 to the charity of the Pearson Award winner’s choice.

TNT Graphics is chosen to replace Wanner as publisher of the scanner.

New Award

The ASHE Lifetime Achievement Award was created, to recognize ASHE Members who have supported the Society throughout their career.

2010
Reorganization

The organization of ASHE regions was changed from Regions 1 through 9 to geographically-named regions as follows:

  • Northeast Region – Four directors
  • Mid-Atlantic Region – Two directors
  • Southeast Region – Two directors
  • Great Lakes and North Central Region – One director
  • South Central Region – Vacant
  • Rocky Mountain Region – Phoenix Sonoran Section administered by Southeast Region
  • North Central Region – Central Dakotah Section administered by Great Lakes Region

There are 41 Sections at this time.

 

ASHE Store, ASHE registration

An ASHE Company Store was established to permit National, Regions and Sections to purchase various items containing the ASHE Logo for use at various events.

The Board authorized contracting with Business Filings Incorporated (BizFilings, Inc.) to act as ASHE’s Registered Agent in the state of Pennsylvania. This service provides ASHE with a permanent registered office address in Pennsylvania and a monthly informational report

ASHE formed a partnership with the ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) .

ASHE and the ASHE logo were registered as trademarks.

2007
New Awards

Five new awards were created in 2007

    • The Robert E. Yeager Award will be for Section Diversity in membership (related to contractors and suppliers, consultants, and government sectors); and
    • The Terence D. Conner Award will be for Retention of Members based on drops October 1 of the previous year.
    • The ASHE Member of the Year Award, will be to recognize an ASHE member that has helped the organization meet one or more of the Strategic Plan Goals.
    • The President’s Award will be to recognize a person that helped the outgoing National President achieve his/her goals.
    • The Young Member of the Year will be to recognize a young member (under age 35) that contributed significantly to ASHE and/or the highway industry.

    Ribbons rather than plaques will be used for section awards for all future awards.

2003
Shirley Stuttler Appointed Special Assistant

Shirley Stuttler was appointed as Special Assistant to the National President.  Shirley served for nineteen years, ending with her passing in 2022.

2001
Russell Horn Award

Past National President Russell Horn, P.E. created a $1,000 per year stipend to the Robert E. Pearson/Person of the Year Award to be given to a charity named by the person receiving the annual Robert E. Pearson/Person of the Year Award.

ASHE has a Website

ASHE stepped into the modern technology arena when it established a web site for the first
time.

1996
Reorganization

The Board approved a reorganization of the Society.  The plan provided balanced representation for all 29 Sections through a Regional restructuring overseen by nine National Directors.

The first ASHE Student Chapter was formed by the Central Florida Section. The 26 members are all engineering students of the University of Central Florida.

The Board signing a two-year contract with Wanner Associates, Incorporated to provide management services as part of Warner’s contract to publish the scanner.

1995
The Board Diversifies

Sandy Ivory of the Altoona Section was welcomed as the first female National Board member.

“National  Conventions” are now “National Conferences”

1989
New Awards

An award was created to recognize the Section with the greatest numerical increase in membership.  The award is named after Gene G. Smith.

The Board also approved guidelines for the National Man [now person] of the Year Award.

The Board also approved the Society’s first Long-Range Plan.

1978
Convention Award

A new award was crested with a plaque going to the Section having the largest number of members present at the Opening Session (excluding the Host Section). This award was presented for the first time to the Pittsburgh Section.

The “George K. Hart Award” was created to recognize the Section with the greatest annual percentage increase in membership.

ASHE scanner is published

The first issue of the ASHE scanner was published in January, 1965.

 

On May 15, the third Annual Convention was held in Harrisburg, PA

1963
First National Convention

The Southwest Penn Section was chartered on February 5.

On May 25, the first annual Convention, a single-day event, was held in, Bedford, PA.

Membership had grown to 555 members with five Sections (Harrisburg, Clearfield, Franklin, Altoona and Southwest Penn)

1962

The Franklin Section and the Altoona Section were chartered on September 1 and October 4, respectively.

1961
First Sections

The second Annual Meeting of the Society was held May 8, 1961 at which time President Ray K. Grove was installed. At the same time Walter H. Burke was installed as President of the Harrisburg Section. At the meeting, the first Charter was presented to Harrisburg.

 

The Clearfield Section was chartered as the second section of the Society on May 15.

1958
Formal formation

The Articles of Incorporation were presented to the Dauphin County (Pennsylvania) Court, and name of the Society had been cleared and approved.  On this date the first meeting of the Board of Directors was held.  The concept of Sections was conceived.  The chartering dinner was held on June 17, 1958 in Mechanicsburg, PA.

1957
Initial Meeting

The first formal meeting of the Society was held on April 29, 1957 in the Conference Room of the Department of Highways building in Harrisburg, PA. The purpose of this meeting was to organize and establish a National Society of Highway Engineers. Paul Musspratt, P.D.H., was the acting Chairman for the meeting.
