Project Description
State Route (SR) 19 is a high-volume, north-south expressway that bisects southern Pittsburgh, carrying 28,000 vehicles daily. The primary route between the North Shore and I-376 to the Pittsburgh International Airport, the corridor serves as the hazardous material bypass for the Fort Pitt Tunnel and provides essential
access to Heinz Field and PNC Park, homes of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Completing the corridor reconstruction also included replacing Shaler Street Bridge, which crosses over SR 19. The bridge replacement provided an ideal opportunity for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to demonstrate the benefit of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), a new accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology for the department.
Project Features
- Off-site span construction
- Coordination with sporting events
- Fourteen percent grade on bridge
- Temporary works to keep spans level during moves
